  Windows 10 64-bit : SA-SAMS Spread 6.0.57
Posted by: SarelK - 09-26-2016, 04:05 PM - Forum: Microsoft Windows Support - No Replies

A tiny, but frustrating problem that I encountered on Windows 10 64-bit when saving SBA Results, that seemingly only crept in after installing the SA-SAMS Spread 6.0.57:

Problem Symptoms:
Once I started loading or saving SBA results (12.3) through the network, I found that I could do nothing else on my computer, without having to wait several seconds for each action to load, i.e. difficulty multi-tasking in Windows, waiting about 25 seconds for each character I typed into MS Word to display onscreen, etc.  This prevailed until such time that the action on SA-SAMS was finalised - then everything returned to normal, until the next SBA action was undertaken.  System diagnostics confirmed that CPU, RAM, Disk and Network utilisation were well within bounds (lower than 50%) under load, during the process.

Researching the rationale behind Microsoft implementing the two folder sets for 64-bit and 32-bit operating systems, without going into too many technical details, brought me to the conclusion that:

(a) in the instance of some 32-bit applications, as long as there aren't any conflicting executable or dll files,  it really doesn't matter whether the program is installed to the 32-bit or 64-bit folder set, and

(b) it is purely a more convenient way of separating 32-bit and 64-bit applications and their requirements in terms of executable and dll files, instead of having each program dictate for itself and keep track of where its 64-bit or 32-bit versions of files are to be kept, upon installation.

The solution that worked for me:

1. Uninstall the SA-SAMS Spread Grid 6.0.57

2. Uninstall SA-SAMS

3. Reinstall SA-SAMS (first time installation). Important: instead of installing SA-SAMS to the C:\Program Files (x86)\EdusolSAMS folder (for 32-bit applications), install to C:\Program Files\EdusolSAMS (64-bit applications folder).

4. Reinstall the SA-SAMS Spread Grid 6.0.57

5. Install the latest SA-SAMS Patch.

Everything should be good after this.  I am not saying that this is a clear-cut solution, but I simulated the problem by uninstalling and reverting to the (x86) folder, and back, two times after. I hope this can help somebody out there.

Problems placing a school logo on General Settings (1.16)
Posted by: DBE SA-SAMS - 09-26-2016, 07:24 AM - Forum: 1. General School Information - Replies (4)

General settings (1.16) greyed out due to the following:
1. This function is only activated if the db is on a PC. Copy the db from network place on PC and insert the logo - replace copy now on network.
2. If your database in not on the default folder, which is the data folder of your SA-SAMS,  1.16 will be greyed out. To fix , you have to place it back on the default folder - changing the setting - then put it back to the preferred location.

Windows 10 Install: HRESULT -2147010895 Error
Posted by: SarelK - 09-16-2016, 12:25 PM - Forum: Free State : Errors, Omissions & Submissions Utility - Replies (4)

I am not sure if other schools in the country use a similar tool, but this is specific to the EOS (Errors, Omissions and Submissions) Tool developed by Free State EMIS and used by schools in the province to (a) check for errors and omissions in the school's SA-SAMS database and (b) for the online submission of the database to the Free State Provincial EMIS Data Warehouse.

On Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit), you may encounter the following error message during installation of the tool:
"Module C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Business Objects\2.7\bin\ExportModeller.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147010895. Contact your support personnel."

Solution:
1. Terminate and allow the roll-back (undoing) of the installation.
2. Download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) from here.

Note, in context:
Although x86 denotes a 32-bit Operating System and x64 denotes a 64-bit Operating System, since SA-SAMS is currently not being developed natively for 64-bit Windows Operating Systems, the 32-bit version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package is required.
